Interesting Facts about the Human Body
Weird and Wonderf
1. You lose your taste buds as you age
Here's another downside to getting old: your sense of taste vanishes. By the time most people reach 60, half their taste buds will be gone.
2. Pound for pound, a baby is stronger than an ox
I wouldn't suggest hitching your tot up to a miniature wagon, but your bub could probably pull it. And if they were to be put under a ray gun and increased to ox size, they could definitely take the beasts on.
3. Teeth start growing six months before birth
It's a bit creepy to think of unborn babies with healthy chompers, but in truth the teeth buds typically form late in the first trimester. The teeth generally don't push through the gums until babies are between four and seven months of age. And thank goodness for that, because when they do bite, they bite hard!
4. In a lifetime, you'll make enough saliva to fill two Olympic pools
It's a bit disgusting to think about, but all that saliva will serve you well. It starts the digestive process and keeps your mouth lubricated. So perhaps we shouldn't be turned off after all!
5. Feet deserve their sweaty reputation
Feet have a whopping 500, 000 sweat glands, and they can produce a full pint of sweat each day. No wonder your gym shoes smell so toxic! Men's sweat glands are also more active than women's, so make sure you remember the talcum powder lads!
6. You can survive without most of your internal organs
Again, we don't recommend trying this, but you wouldn't die from a few missing parts. You can survive without your stomach, spleen, and almost every organ from around the pelvic and groin. You only need one of those lungs and kidneys too, and you could stand to lose 75% of your liver and 80% of your intestines. I can't promise you'll feel the best without those spare parts, but you'd hang in there!
7. Your stomach acid can dissolve razor blades
We wouldn't suggest trying it to see, but the hydrochloric acid in your stomach could dissolve a razor blade. So it's more than capable than dealing with your latest fast food binge! With acid so strong, it's unsurprising that we also get a new stomach lining every few days.
8. Blondes have the most hair
Blondes might not really have the most fun, but they're definitely hairier than the rest of us with an average of 146, 000 follicles. That's well above the 110, 000 follicles of raven-haired folks, the 100, 000 follicles of brunettes, and the measly 86, 000 follicles of redheads. With each follicle capable of producing 20 hairs, that's one impressive mane!
9. The nail on your middle finger grows the fastest
All nails are not created equally. That nail on your middle fingers grows faster than the rest, and the one on your dominant hand has the edge. And the nails that lag behind? They're the ones on your shortest fingers!
10. The brain generates as much power as a 10-watt light bulb
It seems those pictures of people with light bulb's above their head aren't too far off. The brain doesn't just generate that amount of power when you have a good idea though. It even continues to light up when you're sleeping!
